Hello all! Another week done and we’re nearing the end of March. Time flies for better or for worse.

For a number of reasons, this week was not as productive as last. One scene in particular proved irritatingly stubborn, and another day was largely spent brainstorming and reorganizing. But I managed to finish the week strong with a grand total of 5619 words. Less than last week, but still respectable at my current level, and I came close to last week’s personal best which gives me hope that I can continue to increase my average.

So I’m going to tentatively raise my weekly goal to 700 words a day/ 4900 total (again largely because of the math. Sadly 7 doesn’t go into 5000 evenly.) We’ll see how that goes.

As always, I hope you have a good week.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Hello everyone! Hope you had a good week!

I’ve begun to notice a pattern. It seems that at the beginning of every week my writing stalls a bit before picking up again somewhere around Wednesday. I started last week with a pair of dismal writing days for a variety of reasons, but Saturday was my best day of the year so far and as a result I wrote a grand total of 6646 words this week.

This experiment seems to be working. My writing totals have been trending upwards this year, and my daily average has been slowly building, which was the main goal of forcing myself to publicly keep track. Having said that, I don’t think I’m quite ready to up my weekly goals a second time just yet. So this week I’m going to once stick with my goal of 600 words a day/ 4200 total. If this is a good week I may revise upwards next time. Onwards!

Hope you have a good week.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Hello everyone! Hope you had a good week! And I hope it was warmer than mine. Seasonably appropriate temperatures feel colder when the rest of the winter is unusually warm. Global warming!

This week, despite one day where I barely managed 100 words, I wrote a grand total of 5714 words. Which is the most I’ve managed in a single week for quite some time. At my absolute peek a few years ago I did have a brief spurt where I was averaging 2000-3000 words a day, but that was more of a sprint then a marathon.

As I get closer and closer to the end of the draft, I hope the light at the end of the long, long tunnel will motivate me to recapture my former word count glory. We shall see.

In any case, this week I’m going to stick with my goal of 600 words a day/ 4200 total. See if I can keep it up. Onwards!

Hope you have a good week.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Goals and deadlines. The clock never stops ticking! Aaaaah!

Greetings! It is the penultimate day of February, the weather is unseasonably warm, and I have just returned from a fun-filled visit to the dentist. Have you ever tried brainstorming while someone has their hand in their mouth, fiddling with your teeth? It’s not as easy as it sounds.

In other non-tooth related news, I wrote 4653 words this week, exactly 14 words less than last week, but comfortably more than my new 4200 word goal.

I spent some time this week trying to figure out a hazily realized tangle of scenes. I knew the space they needed to fill and what needed to happen, but the particulars were not as clear in my head as I thought, and it wasn’t quite working right. I think I’ve figured out how to make it work but it would have required changing the setting. So instead I kept going, as if I’d already made the changes. More work for the 2nd draft!

In any case, this week I’m going to stick with my goal of 600 words a day/ 4200 total. See if I can keep it up. Digits still crossed.

Hope you have a good week.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Happy President’s Day (Apparently)!

Clearly I have no sense of time, but I hope you’ve had a good week and that if you’re in the US I hope you enjoy the holiday and the…er…car sales.

This week I wrote 4667 words once again managing to do much better than I thought I had. It’s nice at the end of a week to find you’ve been more productive than you thought.

Events are reaching a fever pitch. Plans are colliding, violence is erupting, and I’m quickly approaching certain confrontations that I’ve been looking forward to writing for nearly a year now. So that’s exciting, and I’m tentative hoping to finally have the draft done within the next 2-3 weeks. Tentatively.

On that note, I’m going to change my writing goals for the first time. Since I’ve managed 4000 words or more the past two weeks I’m going to make that my goal going forward. 600 words a day/ 4200 total. (Because 4000 didn’t divide evenly into 7. It’s the little things.) So we’ll see how that goes. Fingers crossed.

In any case, I hope you have a good week.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Hello everyone! I hope you’ve had a good week. Mine was…passable. Neither good nor bad, really, but when I went to tally my word count I found that I had done far better than I expected. I somehow managed 4116 words despite feeling like I was failing miserably. So appearances can be deceptive, apparently, and what I thought was a long, slog of a week was actually more than usually successful.

As always, my goal for the coming week will remain 500 words a day/ 3500 total. The next chapter feels a little hazier in my mind than the outline suggested, so I may have to spend a day or two fleshing that out. In any case, I hope you have a good week.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Just a quick update today. Last week was not overwhelmingly productive for a number of reasons, but hopefully I can fix that this week.

Last week I managed 2847 words. And as always, my goal for the coming week will remain 500 words a day/ 3500 total. I’m finally hitting the climatic parts where everyone’s plans and machinations collide. Hopefully that will propel the writing.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Hello all! I hope you’re well.

Progress this week was a bit like running on a treadmill. Did a lot of writing, and nipping and tucking, and a little restructuring. The end result is better and stronger than it was before, but it’s also more or less exactly where I was a week ago. I managed to finish my goal of 3 edited/rewritten chapters, although two of them are ones I had already done last week. Rewriting the rewriting! One step forward, two steps back. Well, half a step back anyway.

My word count was actually fairly strong. I did manage 3600 words although in the process of editing I also managed to cut around 1500. Which confuses things slightly.

This week (9/19-9/26) I’m going to maintain last week’s goals of 500 words a day/ 3500 total and 3 edited/rewritten chapters, since despite feeling unproductive and circling back on myself, I did actually come much closer to my goals than I thought. Hopefully this week will be better.

Have a good week. Happy reading and happy writing!

Goals and deadlines. Writing on the clock. (Not literally.)

Hello all! I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was filled with writing and relaxation (and thai food). This has been a long week both at work and at home but I did manage to get some writing done every day. As expected I did not quite manage to reach my perhaps overly ambitious goals.

The week started off well, with an unexpected bout of productivity before trailing off slightly. I set myself the overall goal of 5600 words for the week and managed 3056, which isn’t terrible. Especially since one day was largely spent cutting a 3000+ word scene down to 1800.

More importantly, I intended to edit/ rewriting 5 chapters and managed to finish 4 and a half chapters. Over all it was a reasonably productive week. All things considered.

This week (9/11-9/18) I’m going to lower my my word count goal to 500 words a day/ 3500 total. At this stage the chapter count remains the more important goal and I’m also going to revise that down to 3 edited/rewritten chapters. I have a number of scenes that require more serious rewriting, so it may be slower going. We shall see. I’m still learning how to gage the editing/rewriting process.

I hope you have a good week. Happy reading and happy writing!

I wish my desk was this neat

Hello everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful summer. It is September already and as ever I am hard at work typing away at The Fall of the House of Talis, Book 2 in the Chronicles of Talis. This has been a protracted process filled with a number of false starts and stops, which I will write about at greater length at some point in the near future if anyone is interested in the trials and tribulations of my writing.

For now though, I’m going to try something a little different. At the start of each week I’m going to share my immediate writing goals for the next 7 days and my successes and failures in meeting last week’s goals. In theory this will hold me accountable, and might prove an interesting (if only to myself) way to chart the writing process in perhaps too much detail.

Since this is the first week, I don’t have any results to share, which means that for the first and probably last time I haven’t failed to meet my goals. If only because I hadn’t set any.

This week (9/5-9/11) I’m going to set myself the goal of a relatively small 800 words a day, 5600 words total. More importantly I intend to finish editing and rewriting 5 chapters. Some require much more work than others.

This is going to be a very busy week non-writing so I think I’m being both conservative and over-ambitious. We’ll see how it goes…

I hope you have a good week. Happy reading and happy writing!
